december 2023-january 2024

New York State hosted a series of mayoral control hearings in each borough in December and January. Members of our group testified in large numbers for ending mayoral control and for building democratic governance of schools.

FEBRUARY-MARCH 2024

Meetings

We're continuing to meet as a coalition to figure out what structures to put forward, to make sure all rights-holders are considered, and to continue building the movement for democracy in schools.

Political implications

Senator John Liu is the NYS Chairman of the Education Committee. He will put forward a bill that's an alternative to mayoral control in March.

june 2024

Governor Kathy Hochul and state legislators will decide whether or not to extend mayoral control.

Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks will continue advocating for an extension, we'll continue fighting for democracy in schools.
